Miter Saws |
Miter saws aren't the most popular tool in the shop or a necessary part of a wood workers tool list. They do however perform a unique function in the work shop. For anyone applying finishing trim they are indispensable for getting perfect miter cuts.
A
miter saw has a circular blade that is powered by an
electric motor. The entire motor and blade are able to pivot
giving angled cuts up to 45 degrees. In
some case the motor and blade can tilt enabling compound
miters to be cut. This can be coupled with the ability
to have the blade slide allowing the miter saw a greater
cutting width.
Miter saws are typically manufactured with an 8" or
10" diameter blade, although larger and smaller
blade sizes are available. The size of the blade determines
the width and thickness of stock a miter saw can cut.
A miter saw should be
mounted onto a table and have an adequate side extension to
fully support lumber at the same level of the miter saw table. This
will ensure that you aren't straining to control
the piece of lumber while making a cut. |
